02 — The problem

The challenge

The platform needed to support real-world program rules including scheduled batches, configurable pricing, deposits, VAT, accommodation options, authentication, and administrative content while remaining straightforward for prospective students to use.

03 — The approach

How I approached it

I built the application across the public website, booking flows, database models, authentication, payment-related workflows, and CMS functionality. The system keeps configurable business values in the data model so that program information can change without rewriting application logic.

Engineering breakdown

The important parts of the project were not just the interface, but the systems and decisions behind it.

01

Program and batch scheduling

Programs are represented separately from their scheduled batches, allowing the organization to manage upcoming sessions without duplicating program information.

The scheduling model supports recurring upcoming sessions while keeping the actual session dates explicit and manageable.

02

Dynamic pricing

Pricing depends on the selected program and enrollment options. The platform supports configurable pricing logic including VAT and deposit requirements instead of hardcoding values into the interface.

03

Authentication and protected administration

Administrative functionality is protected through server-side authentication and route controls. Session handling uses secure HttpOnly cookies and JWT-based authentication.

04

Content and SEO

The platform also includes CMS-managed content and technical SEO features such as structured metadata, sitemap generation, and program-specific structured data.

05

Key engineering work

  • Program and batch management
  • Dynamic pricing
  • VAT and deposit calculations
  • Enrollment workflows
  • Accommodation options
  • Authentication
  • Admin CMS
  • Technical SEO
06

Key decisions

  • Model programs and batches separately.
  • Keep pricing rules configurable instead of embedding values throughout the UI.
  • Protect administrative functionality at the server boundary.
  • Generate SEO metadata from actual program data.
07

Results

  • Turned program information and enrollment workflows into one digital platform.
  • Reduced the need to hardcode changing program and pricing information.
  • Created an administrative foundation for managing the platform after launch.
08

What I learned

  • Configurable business rules are easier to maintain when they are represented explicitly in the data model.
  • SEO should be considered part of product architecture when content is dynamically generated.
  • Authentication is only one part of securing an admin system; authorization and server-side boundaries matter too.
