02 — The problem

The challenge

The system needed to handle real operational rules rather than simple CRUD workflows. Attendance had to integrate with an external device service, payroll depended on working days and leave rules, employees moved through different lifecycle states, and sensitive administrative actions required stronger authentication.

03 — The approach

How I approached it

I worked across the application from the interface and API layer through database design, authentication, business rules, integrations, scheduled operations, and deployment. The focus was on keeping business rules explicit and making the system safe to change as requirements evolved.

Engineering breakdown

The important parts of the project were not just the interface, but the systems and decisions behind it.

01

Building around real business rules

The platform goes beyond employee records and dashboards. Attendance, leave, payroll, fiscal years, employee lifecycle changes, and regularization workflows all depend on rules that need to remain consistent across the system.

I worked on structuring these rules at the application and database layers so that operational workflows could be handled predictably rather than relying on frontend-only logic.

02

Device integration and attendance

Attendance data is connected to an external device service. The system maps device users to employees and uses those mappings when processing clock-in and clock-out activity.

Attendance records are maintained around an employee and work-date model, allowing the system to reason about daily attendance, late arrivals, absences, and automated clock-out behavior.

03

Payroll and employee lifecycle

Payroll required handling joining dates, working days, weekly offs, holidays, approved leave, paid-leave accrual, and statutory deductions.

Employee lifecycle operations such as leave and rejoining also needed controlled administrative workflows rather than unrestricted database mutations.

04

Security and reliability

Sensitive operations use authenticated server-side checks, password verification for high-impact administrative actions, validation, and protected session flows.

The system also uses scheduled operations and integrations that need to remain reliable even when individual requests or external services fail.

05

Key engineering work

  • Attendance and device integration
  • Payroll and leave workflows
  • Fiscal-year management
  • Role-based access control
  • Employee lifecycle workflows
  • Regularization workflows
  • Automated attendance operations
  • Production-oriented security
06

Key decisions

  • Keep business rules on the server rather than trusting client-side state.
  • Use explicit employee/work-date relationships for attendance records.
  • Protect high-impact administrative mutations with stronger verification.
  • Keep external device integration behind application-level boundaries.
07

Results

  • Centralized multiple HR workflows into one production platform.
  • Reduced dependence on manual administrative processes.
  • Created a foundation that can evolve as HR and payroll requirements change.
08

What I learned

  • Business software becomes significantly more complex when rules interact across modules.
  • Database design is often part of the business logic, not just data storage.
  • Security boundaries need to be designed around actions and risk, not only pages.
